Microsoft on Tuesday officially ended support for the first version of its Windows Vista operating system.

At Cloud Connect 2011 in Silicon Valley, TechWeb's David Berlind gets a demonstration of CA's recently acquired 3Tera AppLogic graphical private cloud deployment tool.

Going forward, Vista users who are still running the so-called RTM (released-to-manufacturing) version of Vista must upgrade to a version that includes either Service Pack 1 or Service Pack 2 if they wish to continue receiving full support from Microsoft.

However, customers who don't upgrade will still receive limited help under a new Microsoft support policy.

"The revised policy allows Microsoft support professionals to make the best effort to provide limited break/fix troubleshooting to customers on unsupported service packs, even without custom support contracts, and help them migrate to a supported service pack," a Microsoft spokesman said, in an e-mail.

"Microsoft requires customers to transition to supported service packs to receive hotfixes, security updates, time zone updates, or access to sustained engineering," the spokesman added.

Windows Vista debuted in January of 2007, but the operating system was largely deemed a flop by industry watchers.

Consumers complained about its intrusive security measures, while businesses shunned it en masse due to concerns about horsepower and memory requirements, and compatibility problems with their existing applications.

Microsoft in October released Windows 7 with the hope of erasing memories of Vista.

Windows 7 carries a lighter footprint than Vista and ditches the obnoxious security alerts that interrupted users even when they were performing routine functions like moving a file from one folder to another.

Over the past few months, I’ve snapped hundreds of screenshots of the Windows 7 interface, for use in galleries here at ZDNet (like this one and this one) and in Windows 7 Inside Out. But static screenshots don’t do justice to some of the nuances of actually using a feature. So when ZDNet’s crack video production team offered to help me to produce some screencasts, I jumped at the chance.

You’ve no doubt heard about Aero Snap and Aero Shake. Here’s a chance to see these features in action. (Hint: Click the Full Screen button, in the lower right corner, just to the right of the Menu button, to see the most detail.)

I actually remember the first time I saw this feature demonstrated for me. I was immediately impressed with the idea that simple mouse gestures could make window management so much easier. That’s especially important these days, when 20- and 24-inch monitors are commonplace.

The story broke with an article in the US Laptop magazine than claimed Windows 7 lopped 3 hours of a Toshiba NB2O5 netbook, compared to when it was running Windows XP. With Windows XP, the NB2O5 lasted for nine hours 24 minutes away from the mains, while with Windows 7, it ran for six hours 15 minutes.

Netbook user forums have already seen complaints about the battery life of netbooks running the public beta and release candidate of Windows 7, as these sample threads from EeeUser, the Acer Aspire User Forum and MSIWind.net show. Tom’s Hardware also experienced reduced netbook battery life in its Windows 7 tests.

Windows 7 runs surprisingly well on the Intel Atom processor used in most netbooks, so these battery life results are a little disappointing for anyone looking to install Microsoft’s latest operating system once it goes on sale on 22 October.

Microsoft SBS Wizard Troubleshooting

Yesterday i have resolved my 4th SBS Wizard related difficulty this year. The symptoms are the same on both SBS 2003 and SBS 2008 – when attempting to use the Wizards to create a user or computer, the wizard works all the way until the last step and then fails with an error.

The trouble in all 4 cases this year has been because someone treated an SBS server like a Windows Standard Server. And the reality is that while it is based upon standard server, it really is not. There have been major tweaks and adjustments to permit it to work the way it does. Among them is various restrictions on changes to Active Directory. Basically, unless you understand exactly how the SBS Wizards leverage Active Directory, it is best not to do anything through the standard Active Director Users and Computers console. The Wizards require that users, computer and other data are placed in very specific Organization Units, with very specific names. Renaming OUs or moving users into a more “logical” place will prevent the wizards from working properly.

The people who get themselves into too much trouble are often IT consultants who think they know better – but really don’t. The reason is that a newbie administrator will actually read the documentation that comes with SBS and/or pickup a great reference book, which all say the same thing — use the wizards for absolutely everything, don’t make any changes to Active Directory outside of a wizard. The only exception being would be documentation which specifically takes SBS into account. A Microsoft Technet page will specifically call out that it works with SBS; if it just mentions Standard Server, beware! Remember that SBS is made for oranizations of 69 users or less, and in these environments, rarely will you need a complex OU scheme.

In all four cases this year, it has been because someone has renamed or deleted the default SBS OUs which are created automatically. A quick rename of the OUs back to what they were origionally named, will resolve your problems. That’s it, no big changes, registry adjustments, etc. Simply put the OUs back to where they were automatically created and you should be all set.

Windows Vista Service Pack 2 A guided tour

This 264MB monster (or 200MB if you install it via Windows Update) not only fixes bugs in the OS, but also adds brand new functionality both to core services and applications such as Internet Explorer and Outlook Express.

We've been using the beta Release Candidate 2 (RC2) for some time, and generally we're impressed. It seems pretty stable and has not yet created any major errors with the PCs we've installed it on. All the screenshots here were taken using build 2257 of RC2, so it's possible that some details may be changed by the time of the final public release version.

Microsoft's focus with SP2 is security, security and security - many of the changes are deep in the inner workings of XP and won't immediately be obvious to users. They could cause some problems for existing applications, so as ever it's wise to do a full system backup before installation.

In this overview we've concentrated on giving you a visual tour of the major new features - the technical changes are covered in great depth on the Microsoft website if you're interested. We plan to do a more in-depth look at the underlying technology in a future issue.

There are a couple of features not illustrated here, such as the addition of plain text email formatting to Outlook Express, but we've tried to cover as many of them as possible within the available space. The behaviour of Internet Explorer has also been changed, for example, to prevent malicious websites hiding the navigation bar or spawning multiple pop-ups. Overall we believe SP2 is a genuinely worthwhile update - many of the features are well overdue, but 'better late than never' is a phrase that's becoming familiar to most Windows users.

Service Pack 2 is at least a 100MB download. Before you download it you'll be prompted to install the new Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS), which speeds up future patch downloads by only downloading files that have changed.

After installation, the first thing you'll see is the new Security Centre that gives you easy access to your firewall, automatic updates and Internet settings. The antivirus settings can't be changed from here, though. Security Center can be opened from Control Panel.

If the publisher of an executable program can't be determined, Windows will now warn you before it lets you run it. This feature checks whether the program has a digital signature, something that many valid programs don't have at the moment. It's another welcome security feature in SP2.

Bluetooth users will be very happy to see this screen. Service Pack 2 adds native support for Bluetooth - this screen shows the Options tab found when you double-click the new Bluetooth applet in Control Panel. We found it worked well using an unbranded USB Bluetooth dongle, with drivers being found automatically. The control panel lets you configure discovery settings and connections to other Bluetooth devices. You can also set up Bluetooth COM ports.

Virus News - Macs are not Immune, Conficker Update

Symantec researchers believe they have found evidence of a virus that is specific to the Macintosh computers. Some experts are not sure of the actual threat to Mac Users. The interesting thing is that Mac users have always bragged about how safe their Macs are compared to PCs. You have probably even seen the commercials that try to pound PCs into the ground.

The virus (just like many viruses on the PC side of things) is downloaded along with a pirated or illegal copy of legitimate software. The type of virus is called a botnet, which gets on the computer, and can get out onto the internet, and cause a distributed denial of service (DDos) attack.

The way this attack works is a bunch of computers keep going to a website or sites, over and over. With thousands of computers doing this, it blocks anyone from getting to that site.
Many Mac experts are downplaying this and saying the media attention is not necessary. Many are also saying the Mac is still safe, and security software is not needed. Good luck with that!
Conficker - We are not out of the woods yet

Reports are that the Conficker virus is infecting more computers, and could possibly do more on May 1st. I wrote about this in an entry in March. April 1st has come and gone, and most people think it was just a scare. This particular worm is more of a long-term, slow acting virus. There are three parts to this virus, and the one that has my attention is the last one which has to do with your computer and not stuff it will do to others on the Internet.

Here is a quote from Fox News online, " Conficker also carries a third virus that warns users their PCs are infected and offers them a fake anti-virus program, Spyware removal 2009 for $49.95, according to Russian-based security researcher Kaspersky Lab. If they buy it, their credit card information is stolen and the virus downloads even more malicious software."

Interestingly, I have seen very similar malware on many machines this month. I cannot say it was this virus, but it is interesting that the malware I have been cleaning was similar, and most of the customers had valid, up to date virus protection. They could have been "drive by" type viruses, but there is also a chance the malware was hidden in the Conficker virus. Once these machines are cleaned up, it is really hard to tell, because all traces are gone.

In the search field, type the name of the file or folder you are looking for, the date it was last modified, or even the author of the file. As you type, Vista searches for the file. Vista also provides you with a several options to narrow your search. You can click All to search everything, E-mail to search e-mail, Document to search documents, and so on.

Click the Start button.

How to Install Windows 7 Beta on an Acer Aspire One Netbook

How do you install an Operating System onto a laptop with no optical drive? The answer is you need a bootable USB drive. It took a lot of searching around the net to work out how to do this, so I thought I’d outline the steps here, mainly for my own benefit, so I know where to look the next time LOL. This guide will show you how to get Windows vista support Acer Aspire One laptop, YMMV with other laptop.

Step 1 – Let’s create a bootable USD Drive!
1. Clearly, the first thing you need is a USB drive and the one I used was an 8GB Seagate model.
2. Plug the drive into your PC.
3. Open a command prompt as administrator.
4. Get the drive number by typing:
diskpart
list disk
On my machine the USB disk was number 1.
5. Format the drive by typing:
select disk 1
clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
active
format fs=NTFS
assign
exit
6. Mount the Windows 7 beta iso using Daemon Tools or similar.
7. Navigate to the boot directory
cd E:\boot
8. Using bootsect, we’ll make the USB drive a bootable NTFS drive, ready for a Windows 7 image (my drive was labeled G):
bootsect /nt60 G:
9. We are finished with the command prompt now, so you can close it.

Step 2 – Copy the installation files from the mounted Windows 7 iso to the USB drive.

Step 3 – Install on the Netbook
1. Plug in the USB drive and turn on the netbook
2. On start up press to select the bootable drive
3. Select the USB drive and press return
4. The netbook will boot from the USB drive and the installation will begin
5. Install as normal.
I hope this helps someone, and if not, at least I’ll know where to look the next time I need this information.

How Printer driver problems Comes

The printer driver that you installed when you set up your printer tells your parallel port how to manage the data being sent to the printer. Different makes and models of printers require precise software to effectively manage their particular applications.

One of the most common printing problems is that an incorrect or defective printer driver is being used. This can result in all sorts of strange gibberish on the printed page. If you selected the wrong printer driver for the printer you are trying to use, you may need to purge the print jobs that are hung up in the spooler as well as reset the printer to remove any bad data that remains in its buffer.

Purge the print jobs first. You can do this in Windows 95/98 by clicking on Start, Settings, Printers, and then clicking the icon for the appropriate printer. When the window for the printer opens, click Printer in the upper-left corner and then click Purge Documents.

Now reset your printer to remove the last traces of the “poison” still in the printer’s buffer.

It’s also possible that you have the correct printer driver but that it isn’t configured properly for the amount of RAM installed in your printer. If the driver is set for more RAM than the printer actually has, an overflow can occur. This might go unnoticed for a long time. It may appear only when you have a large print job or pages with lots of graphics.

How to Print two pages per sheet

The main trouble with printing 2 pages on a single sheet is that some older inkjte printers won't print very close to the bottom of the page, which translates to the right margin of a two column sheet. This can result in uneven margin sizes. Laser printers, and most modern inkjets can cope just fine , some times problem may come in printers and you will need to take printer support from computer support company.

Adjusting Microsoft Word
The first step is to change the page layout from the usual portrait to landscape. Click on the file menu and select page setup.. . You may need to click on the little double arrow if Word is not showing the whole menu. Now click on the Layout tab, and select landscape for the orientation. Now click ok to save the changes.

The next step is to get word to split this wide page into two columns, so each one will be A5 in size. Click on the format menu, and select columns. The simplest approach is to just use the presets and choose the two column layout. Make sure apply to field at the bottom of the dialog box is set to Whole Document and click ok to save the changes.

Remember that now we are printing A5 pages, you may want to use a slightly smaller font size than normal so that the text looks the right size for the page.
The same steps as above can be used for making 3 column handouts as well.

Disable useless Vista Features

If you installed Vista operating system of Microsoft yourself and have problem in installing previous Windows Operating System, you surely noliced that Vista hardly asks any questions about your computer—and what you plan to do with it—than did prior Operating System.

Windows Vista makes all kinds of assumptions about your computing habits and the features you may or may not need, and it inevitably installs some overhead that you simply don't need. You can get rid of it. Windows XP had the Add/Remove Windows Features button in the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs applet, and Vista has something like it.

1. Open Control Panel and click Uninstall a Program to launch Vista's Uninstall or Change a Program Window. In the Tasks pane on the left, click Turn Windows Features On or Off.
2. Check the list of features. Each feature is preceded by a checkbox which, if filled, indicates the feature is installed. If you hover the mouse over a feature, a help tooltip appears to tell you what it is.

3. Uncheck any feature you don't need. Some of the features are headings with a sub-list below them; just click the little + sign to expand.
For my gaming system, I've purged everything except:
• Some of the games
• XPS Viewer (under .NET Framework 3.0)
• Remote Differential Compression (a network optimizer)
• Windows Ultimate Extras
Note that when you uncheck features, you're not removing these features from your system; you're simply turning them off so they don't sit in the background eating up resources. You can turn any of them back on by invoking this window and filling the checkboxes.

Fix “Windows boot configuration data file is missing” Error

As we all know that Microsoft's Windows based Operating Systems
are one of the commonly used operating system all over the world but these operating systems is exposed to several threats.

Some of the common issue associated with Windows based computers are

Symptoms of this error
When we start our operating, we receive the following error message.

Status: 0xc0000034

Causes for this Error
This error is caused due to the following reasons.
1 The Windows Boot Manager (Bootmgr) entry is not present in the Boot configuration data (BCD) store.
2 The BootBCD file on the active partition is damaged or missing.

How to solve this Error.

Method 1:
1 Repair the BCD store by using the Startup Computer Repair option
You can use the Startup Repair option in the Windows Recovery Environment to repair the BCD store. To do this, follow these steps:
1 Put the Windows Vista support installation disc in the disc drive, and then starts the computer.
2 Press a key when you are prompted.
3 Select a language, a time, a currency, and a keyboard or another input method, and then click next.
4 Click Repair your computer.
Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click next.
5 In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Startup Repair.
6 Restart the computer.

Method 2:
Rebuild the BCD store by using the Bootrec.exe tool
If the previous method does not resolve the problem, you can rebuild the BCD store by using the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment. To do this, follow these steps:
1 Put the Windows Vista installation disc in the disc drive, and then starts the computer.
2 Press a key when you are prompted.
3 Select a language, a time, a currency, and a keyboard or another input method, and then click next.
4 Click Repair your computer.
5 Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click next.
6 In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
7 Type Bootrec /RebuildBcd, and then press ENTER.
If the Bootrec.exe tool runs successfully, it presents you with an installation path of a Windows directory. To add the entry to the BCD store, type yes. A confirmation message appears that indicates the entry was added successfully.
If the Bootrec.exe tool cannot locate any missing Windows installations, you must remove the BCD store, and then you must re-create it. To do this, type the following commands in the order in which they are presented. Press ENTER after each command.
Bcdedit /export C:BCD_Backup
ren c:bootbcd bcd.old
Bootrec /rebuildbcd
8 Restart the computer.

If we are not able to solve this error by both the above methods then try method 3

Method 3:
Rebuild the BCD store manually by using the Bcdedit.exe tool
If the previous method does not resolve the problem, you can rebuild the BCD store manually by using the Bcdedit.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment. To do this, follow these steps:
1 Put the Windows Vista installation disc in the disc drive, and then starts the computer.
2 Press a key when you are prompted.
3 Select a language, a time, a currency, and a keyboard or another input method, and then click next.
4 Click Repair your computer.
5 Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click next.
6 In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
7 Type the following command, and then press ENTER:

cd /d Partition:WindowsSystem32

8 Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
bcdedit /enum all
9 In the Windows Boot Loader section of the output from this command, note the GUID that is listed for resumeobject. You will use this GUID later.

How to Make older programs run in Windows XP in Compatibility Mode

Installing any software or application program in Windows XP or Windows Vista can be a major issue. There can be several reasons for this, for example drivers might not be compatible with the operating system or anything as such. But the most common reason for such issue is the compatibility issue. For example you have attached a web cam to your computer having Windows XP, and you try to install the drivers for that Web Cam, but you are not able to install that drivers for the same reason of compatibility issue.

The Compatibility mode of Windows XP does that for us, Windows XP support compatibility mode “Runs the program using settings from a previous version of Windows”. Try this setting if you know the program is designed for (or worked in) a specific previous version of Windows.

Run the Program Compatibility Wizard

We should run the Program Compatibility Wizard before you try other ways of updating your programs or drivers because it identifies compatibility fixes written specifically for Windows XP. If the wizard does not solve your problem, you can try other steps listed at the end of this article.

Here in right side panel, right click to create a new DWORD value with the name NoViewContextMenu (it is case sensitive), then assign number 1 in value data box.
Now close the registry editor and restart your computer after any changes to go into effect.
But next time, if you want to enable right click functionality on desktop then simply change the value of data box or delete the NoViewContextMenu DWORD item.

1. Federated searches. extend Explorer search capabilities beyond the desktop, allowing you to search remote repositories through "search connectors." You can find and download these connectors throughout the Internet. For example, noted Internet blogger Long Zheeng at istartedsomething.com has one for Flickr that I downloaded and tested. As Zheeng says, "Imagine the possibilities. Searching the files on your remote Windows Home Server, searching your documents on Google Docs, finding music on Pandora, finding videos on YouTube.

2. Libraries. A library provides you with the ability to see more than one folder's worth of content in one view. So, for example, the Documents library will show all of your documents in My Documents (C:\Users\\Documents) and Public Documents (C:\Users\Public\Documents) and any other locations you choose. This isn't exactly a new concept. Windows Vista let you perform saved searches and create virtual folders in Explorer. However, Windows 7 libraries also let you write to these saved searches, which you couldn't do before.

3. UAC slider. Personally, I liked the UAC (User Account Control) in Windows Vista. I felt better protected than I did using Windows XP. But I agree that we need an easier way to choose how much protection we want. I mean, it may be safer for people to lock their doors and shut their windows at night, but sometimes there's a good reason to leave a window open. Now you can. Windows 7 provides four UAC settings you can configure with the slider: a) Never Notify; b) Notify me only when programs try to make changes to my computer (do not dim my desktop); c) Default - Notify me only when programs try to make changes to my computer; d) Always Notify.

4. Action Center. Originally I thought this was merely a new name for the Security Center. But in fact Action Center does more than its predecessor. In addition to altering security information (Windows Update, Windows Firewall, Windows Defender, User Account Control, Network and Internet security settings), you can now access maintenance information and troubleshoot computer problems. Here you can check for solutions to problem reports, perform backups or recovery, and more. Yes, it's a one-stop shop.

5 Jump lists. When I first saw a jump list, I'll admit it, I thought it was stupid. After using them a bit, I've changed my mind -- they can be pretty helpful. Right-click a taskbar button, and a jump list will show you common actions such as opening a new tab in IE8. You could even add your favorite Web sites to your IE8 jump list and, with a click, jump to a site. It may only save you a few seconds, but time is money, right? In an enterprise, those seconds add up over thousands of users.

6. Live download for applications. While Internet Explorer and Media Player are still included with Windows, some applications now require a download. You can download Windows Live Call, Windows Live Family Safety, Windows Live Mail, Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live Movie Maker, Windows Live Photo Gallery, and Windows Live Writer all from the Windows Live download site. Personally I don't use these applications in Windows Vista, so I like the idea that I don't have to install them on a new Windows 7 machine. And yet I can grab them if I want them. For example, one item you may need to download is Family Safety because Parental Controls no longer include the ability to block Web sites or track your child's activity.

7. Energy-efficiency improvements. One of the most active topics in the industry is energy efficiency. Sure, we all want our systems to run faster and appear more powerful, but not use more power in the process. Go green? Absolutely -- but maintain the same and better speed. So the engineers for Windows 7 have been very focused on doing just that: reducing the power consumption and environmental impact. Windows 7 is designed toward that end by building on the energy-saving features already existing in previous OS builds like Vista with its Power Options, which reduces power consumption when the system is idle, and Shutdown options that allow the system to go into "sleep" mode. Windows 7 focuses on both reduction of idle power consumption and supporting new device power modes. Read more about it on the MSDN blog.

8. Internet Explorer 8 features. In my post last week, I noted some of the cool new features in IE8 that I thought would improve the browsing experience. These include InPrivate browsing, Web slices, and accelerators. I can see people using Web slices for eBay updates and so forth, and this will save them time having to navigate to oft-visited sites. Accelerators are already saving me time because I can quickly select a word and get a translation or definition. With new accelerators I've loaded, I can also select any celebrity name I come across and get the full IMDB list of movies or shows they are in. (Granted, it's not a timesaver at work, but good nonetheless.)

9. PowerShell 2.0. You have to be a command-line, PowerShell-loving nut to put this one in the top 10, but I yield to my sysadmin side on this one. It is a great thing to have the new command line included within the OS. In fact, I'd like to see Microsoft take the next step and remove the CMD.exe application altogether. PowerShell can perform all the same commands and much, much more.

10. Windows XP Mode. Yes, I know it seems odd that this would be my No. 1 feature. It's actually somewhere around six in my mental list of interesting Windows 7 features, but I've moved it up for a couple of reasons. First, the fact that Microsoft is even including a virtual XP mode shows on some level that Microsoft is aware of the fear on the part of the enterprise to deploy any OS that might not allow their existing applications to function the way they currently do under Windows XP. Second, Microsoft will give it away for free both Windows Virtual PC 7 and the Windows XP Mode drop-in. (Note: It is free for those who have Windows 7 Enterprise, Professional, or Ultimate Edition.) For those of you who rallied to save XP -- well, this will do it! My third reason for making Windows XP mode my No. 1 reason for liking Windows 7 is childish. XP mode seems to really irk my colleague Randall Kennedy (who seems to be irked by most things, even picking on Ubuntu recently). Randall has some good points about how Microsoft could have handled the XP application compatibility issue, but I think Microsoft deserves a nod for acknowledging the need, providing a working solution, and doing it for free (for the most part).

Despite all its quirks, Microsoft Windows does do some things for a good cause. Some files need to be locked down when they are in use, otherwise you menace damaging the file or harming the OS. Unfortunately Windows XP seems to be beset by files that cannot be deleted. These are frequently simple files like videos, MP3 or other seemingly harmless files. You try to delete the file, Windows waits a few minutes before announcing that access is denied, the file is currently in use and cannot be deleted.

If you have encountered this problem, here is a step-by-step process for trying to purge the files you can't delete. It starts with the basics for Windows XP and moves on to more involved tricks. The process will work for all recent Windows releases, but Windows XP has been causing the most the problems, so we will focus on it. Please note: we are assuming that the file is not crucial to the operation of Windows - deleting important system files can cause havoc.

1. Is the file in use? It sounds obvious but it happens. If it is being used or open, close the file and the application that opened it. For example, if it is a Word document, close Microsoft Word.

2. If the file was opened in an application (and subsequently closed), but the program is still running, try quitting the program. Windows will lock a file because the application hasn't yet released it. This is not always Windows fault and can be the fault of the program.

3. If the file is an AVI, in particular a DivX AVI, try renaming it and then deleting it. DivX files don't get on very well with Windows XP and sometimes renaming the file can trick Windows into releasing it.

4. Reboot your PC and don't start any programs. Go directly to the file and delete it.

5. In Windows Explorer, switch to View-Details and then select View-Choose Details. Uncheck everything except the file name. This stops Windows XP trying to read the file - this problem affects many video, audio and graphics files.

6. Still no luck? OK, here is the best trick of all. Most sites give you cryptic Windows registry and DOS commands to remove a file, but the answer is so much simpler. Get a copy of MoveOnBoot. It's free and this simple tool allows you to Move, Copy or Delete files before Windows can lock or alter the files. The changes are made to your hard drive before Windows starts, hence it requires a restart of your system after you give MoveOnBoot its instructions. There are no messy boot or DOS commands, just a simple 3-step process.

Step 1: Locate the name of the file that is causing your problems.

Step 2: Decide if you want to copy, move or delete the file.

Step 3. Choose a destination for moving the file, or a new file name for the rename option (this option won't appear if you are deleting a file).

Click OK to confirm you want to process. The nice thing is that the program doesn't make you reboot straight away. It's a good idea to reboot ASAP, but if you are in the middle of something and want to wait, the program will simply run next time you start Windows.

7. If the file reappears again (check its creation date to ensure it is being recreated) and you can't make it budge, you may have trouble with spyware or a virus on your system (don't overlook the possibility it may also be an important system file). In this case you should get a good spyware removal program to scan your system.

When the big news came down in mid 2006 that Apple would offer a simple method of running Microsoft Windows on some of its Intel-based Macs, it created a buzz heard ‘round the computer community.

The topic has cooled down, but it continues to maneuver and attract a sizable contingent of Apple customers, so Kissdll and TidBlTS Publishing have just issued the third edition of “Take Control of Running Windows on a Mac,” which documents how much has changed since Boot Camp.
What’s most obvious in 2009, Kissel said from his base in Paris, is that “it’s clear that there’s not a whole lot of interest in Boot Camp anymore. It was cool when it came out, but it’s been eclipsed.”

Now, Kissell finds, the most productive way to use Windows XP or Vista on an Intel-equipped Macintosh running the Leopard OS, version 10.5 or later — which is every current model — is to install third-party so-called “virtualization” software, like Parallels Desktop 4.0 Software ($80) and VMware Fusion 2.0 ($80, free trial available).

“Boot Camp is great if you need to get to all your hardware capabilities in the computer, like making full use of memory, the CPU. It works for gamers. For everyone else, Windows runs plenty fast in virtualization, and you don’t have to switch back and forth between Windows and the Mac operating systems,” he said. In all cases, users have to supply their own copy of Windows XP or Vista to install on the Mac.

Why even bother with Windows if Mac works for you, we asked. As Kissell points out in his book, there are Mac equivalents of almost every major Windows application.

But there are reasons: the proliferation of games on Windows (sorely lacking for Macs); some Web sites are designed to be viewed in Windows’ Internet Explorer, and Web designers often need to preview their work in a browser like IE. Plus, he says, “most people have one or two Windows programs that they really have to run that don’t exist for Mac.”

Digg Hackers Strike Next at YouTube

In recent weeks, they've targeted social bookmarking site Digg, spreading malware by adding malicious links into innocuous-seeming comments or in the guise of legitimate posts.
Now, it's the Google-owned video-sharing site YouTube that's coming under similar attack.
Sean-P0ul, threat researcher and security evangelist at antivirus vendor PandaLabs, told that hackers are targeting visitors to porn videos on YouTube, which gives them a greater chance of success

Spokespeople from YouTube did not return requests for comment by press time.
In both the Digg and YouTube attacks, links claim to take visitors to a video. Instead, they redirect them to one of several sites that then download malware like the Adware/Videoplay worm. The worm steals cookies, passwords, user profiles and e-mail account information and sends these to a remote site over the Internet. It can also make copies of itself in removable media to spread further.

The links can also direct users to download fake virus removal software -- called scareware -- which itself often contains viruses.
Correll said these attacks increased by 401 percent between January and the end of February because the malware authors are leveraging the way Digg works -- namely, its voting mechanism, which makes highly rated links more prominent.
"The malware authors were voting their malicious comments up in order to increase the visibility," he said.

Thanks to all the attention their sites received through placement on Digg, the hackers also were able to gain favorable search engine positioning. As a result, they ensured that their malware sites appeared above legitimate sites in search results, thereby spreading their attack even further.

The problem will continue, Correll said. Digg had previously terminated more than 300 accounts for spreading the malware, but the infection is still spreading.
"We're going to see more malicious posts on social networking sites," he said.
In the meantime, social media and community sites like Digg and YouTube are working to keep pace with the bad guys.

"Malware attacks do happen on occasion despite all of our efforts to fight them," Jen Burton, community manager at Digg, told InternetNews.com in an e-mail. Digg is working on solutions that will help keep out links to malicious sites, but these long-term solutions take time to build, she said.

"As always, we rely on our community to report bad content they see on Digg and, as soon as we become aware of the content, we take immediate action," Burton said. "We are always evolving and upgrading our processes to combat this activity, and have several short-term tools in place and are building out longer-term auto-detection features." She did not elaborate.

Rarely have we seen a concept so across the world derided as Microsoft retail stores," wrote the editors of blog MacDailyNews in response to my article last week. "Even Vista and Zune were better received. The fact that Microsoft is seriously considering retail stores is proof positive that the company's 'management' has an immeasurably over-inflated opinion of the company."
Foolish colleague A . Bylund is the lone dissenter, it seems. "Had these stores been running a couple of years ago, Windows Vista might presumably have been sent back to the lab again for a few more rounds of bug-fixing and refinement," he wrote.

I'm not buying it, nor are many of my fellow Fools. "Apple is definitely a consumer electronics product, Microsoft is not. It is a means to an end, not a sensory experience," wrote reader Timberly Marek.

Agreed. Vista's perception problems persisted among corporate IT managers who lobbied for continued support of Windows XP. Some consumers weren't thrilled with the OS, either, but their outcry wasn't nearly as audible.

Still, others really like it. (Gasp!) "Vista is not being embraced as an upgrade for individuals and companies because of the expense factor. Too bad, because Vista offers a great computing experience," wrote commenter prose976 in response to news that Intel had declined to upgrade its XP machines to Vista. Would retail stores have changed its mind? I doubt it.

That said, there is a retail gap for Mr. Softy to fill. Tech-savvy consumers who want an integrated entertainment experience -- like an iTV capable of playing Web, TV, or video game programming on demand -- don't have a home at the mall. Microsoft can change that.

Skeptics will argue that Microsoft has already tried and failed to bridge the gap between the PC and the TV with its Media Center PCs. True. A retail presence probably wouldn't have changed that, either. Why would a similar effort work now?

Competition is more hesitant today, and its technology more capable. Take Apple. Last month, Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook told investors that the iEmpire still considers its Apple TV player "a hobby." Best Buy, meanwhile, is fundamentally a big box retailer. GameStop still offers plenty for gamers, but its business is under assault from e-tailers. In short: None of these retailers are outfitted for Web-centric entertainment.

Now imagine a Microsoft store that features:
• Hands-on displays of the Xbox, networked for multiplayer action.
• Wi-Fi-ready Zunes tricked out with related audio gear.
• And best of all: Big-screen, high-definition TVs showing all sorts of Web content: streamed movies, a live World of Warcraft adventure, YouTube videos.
There'd be room for Windows PCs, too, but only the really advanced stuff -- the stuff that makes your entertainment experience even more entertaining. Let Dell and Hewlett-Packard sell everything else.

Microsoft could also have experts a la Geek Squad and Apple's so-called Geniuses, but they'd be trained for the bridging problem -- installing and servicing home theater systems built around the Xbox or enhanced via the Zune or Windows Mobile smartphones.

Consumers have more access to digital infrastructure than ever before. And that's only going to get better with an Obama administration that has promised national access to broadband Internet. Someone will profit from that by bringing more of the Web into our living rooms.
So far, Apple isn't trying. Microsoft can with the right retail strategy, one that thinks bigger than Windows. What do you say, Mr. Softy? Will you mind the gap?

Prior to Microsoft releasing Windows 7 beta to the public, it had already found its ways to inundation sites. I later found out most of what was on the torrent sites where junk and not worth downloading. Microsoft later released the beta to the public on the 12th of January. To create suspense among the public, Microsoft said the download will only be available to the first 2.5 million people. The quest for the new operating system was so great that thousands if not millions flocked to Microsoft website for the download causing their servers to crush. I wasn't left out; I was there for the download too but couldn't get my hands on it.
I finally got hold of it two days later. Installation was unproblematic and I was not scared of losing data since I installed it on a virtual machine. According to Microsoft, the minimum system requirements were 1GHz processor, 1GB of memory and 16GB of hard drive space. I, however, installed it on 512MB and 8GB hard drive and it worked seamlessly. My first impressions were this is exactly Vista with another name. Microsoft did a good job in reconstructing the Windows vista kernel so it doesn't use as much resources as Vista.
Until the advent of Vista, there was no need for computers running with extravagant amounts of memory. Windows 7 runs pretty well on my 512MB of memory and all my previous drivers from Windows XP installed without a glitch. Microsoft's intention for Windows 7 is for it to be an incremental upgrade with the goal of being fully compatible with existing device drivers, applications, and hardware. Windows 7 is doing exactly that and even more. Even though, the interface looks like Vista, Windows 7 proves to be way better. With new cool features such as Device Stage and Home Group, Windows 7 is definitely the future.
Windows 7 is a Vista clone in exterior but not in performance. You may have read other reviews but don't end your experience there. Go ahead and download Windows 7 and try it out for yourself. Hope you will not be disappointed.
